Travelers without REAL ID could face delays at US airports: TSA
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Travelers wanting to fly within the U.S. on May 7 will need to have a REAL ID, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
But what happens if you don’t have a REAL ID? Anyone who doesn’t have a REAL ID could be pulled over by a TSA agent for additional screening or asked to leave, according to the agency’s website.
“Passengers who do not yet have their REAL ID or another TSA acceptable form of ID can expect to face delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being allowed into the security checkpoint. This includes TSA PreCheck passengers,” the TSA website reads.
Jetsetters who refuse to show an acceptable ID, don’t cooperate with the identity verification check or whose identities cannot be confirmed will not be allowed past the security checkpoint, according to TSA.
New York and New Jersey residents can make an appointment with their local DMV offices to get a REAL ID. If you’re unable to book an appointment before the May deadline, these are acceptable forms of identification, according to TSA:
- Driver’s licenses that are REAL ID compliant
- State-issued enhanced driver’s licenses
- U.S. passport or passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards
- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
- Permanent resident card
- Border crossing card
- An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards
- HSPD-12 PIV card
- Foreign government-issued passport
- Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
- Transportation worker identification credential
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
