Mass honoring Pope Francis to be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A Mass in honor of Pope Francis will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday following the Latin American pontiff’s death at 88 years old.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan will lead the service, which starts at noon. All are invited to attend, officials said.
Dolan then leaves New York City for Rome on Tuesday evening for the pope’s funeral and the conclave.
Pope Francis is set to be buried outside the Vatican, breaking a century-old tradition. He will instead be laid to rest at the St. Mary Major basilica in Rome, saying in his last will that he wished for a simple tomb in the ground bearing only the inscription, “Franciscus.”
The pope died of a stroke just hours after delivering his Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Francis' funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Square, according to the Vatican. The public can pay their respects to the pope starting on Wednesday.
