Watervliet highlights new military banners
WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The City of Watervliet has announced a new design for the military banner program. The new banners cost $175 for a new first time banner and $125 for a replacement.
According to city Mayor Charles Patricelli, Watervliet was one of the first areas to recognize veterans by placing a banner on poles throughout the city. The banner program began over 15 years ago by then Mayor Michael manning and since has grown to over 500 banners displayed throughout the city.
The new banners will feature an American flag on top, followed by an image of the veteran in the middle with their branch of military at the bottom. According to the mayor, the banners last between three and seven years, depending on weather and sunlight.
"The new banner provides a new fresh look," Mayor Patricelli said.
To supplement the program, a website was created that features a short biography of the veteran and their time in the military and a locator of where each banner is located throughout the city. Anyone looking to purchase a new banner or to replace a current one can call Chris Chartrand, 518-270-3815, or obtain an application at the Watervliet Military Banners website.
