Chobani picks Rome for site of $1.2 billion factory and 1,000 jobs
ROME, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- After a nationwide search for a site, Greek yogurt-producer Chobani has chosen the City of Rome for its new 1.4 million square-foot manufacturing facility with 1,000 jobs, Governor Kathy Hochul confirms to NewsChannel 9.
The $1.2 billion facility to be built at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park represents the largest investment in natural food manufacturing in American history, said the governor.
"They're being recruited by other states," said the governor. "They make them very attractive offers to try and take them out of our state. I have to fight back."
New York State has already awarded $23 million in funds to prepare the site to be "shovel-ready" ahead of construction in Rome. Oneida County contributed $6 million to the site preparations.
“This is a generational win for Oneida County and the entire Mohawk Valley," said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.
Even before becoming a household name, Chobani was making the first iterations of its now-famous Greek yogurt in Upstate New York. The company employs nearly 1,000 people at its headquarters in the rural hamlet of South Edmeston in Chenango County, about 30 miles directly south of Utica.
