Café Capriccio honored with New York State Empire Award
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Café Capriccio in Albany received the New York State Empire Award on Monday. The Italian restaurant, which opened its doors in 1982, has become a staple in the Albany community.
Senator Patricia Fahy presented the award to the restaurant alongside owner and chef Jim Rua and other state officials. Café Capriccio, located in a historic brownstone building on Grand Street, has been serving authentic Italian cuisine for over 40 years.
The New York State Empire Award honors businesses across the state that are leaders in their industry, employ innovative methods or products, increase job opportunities and foster economic growth, and cultivate partnerships within their community, while also promoting a culture of philanthropy.
Franco Rua, Jim Rua's son, has taken the lead in the Café Capriccio kitchen lately, and the duo has written six books about the café. Each one of the books spotlights Italian cuisine, culture, and experiences related to life and the world of restaurants.
Evolving during the COVID-19 pandemic with the creation of an outdoor seating section, Café Capriccio's Tuscan Garden opened behind the restaurant. Senator Fahy said Café Capriccio is a cornerstone of the Capital Region and downtown Albany.
“Café Capriccio isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a reflection of everything that makes the Capital Region special. Jim and Franco Rua have poured their hearts into this place, creating not only unforgettable meals, but a warm, welcoming space where people in our community come together," Fahy said. "Their dedication to Italian tradition, hospitality, and excellence has left a lasting mark on our city, and this recognition is well deserved."
Jim Rua said his business remains a beacon in the downtown Albany district. He said the restaurant has attracted loyal regulars from locally and across the state, in addition to being a staple for people who come to the area for the legislative session.
"Grand Street is not only where our business is, but it's also the home of Jim Rua and his family, who live in the surrounding buildings. La famiglia è tutto & la comunità è importante - Family is everything & community is important," said Jim Rua, staff, and family.
