Iconic city centre bridge used by 21,000 drivers every day to close for 12 hours this weekend

A HUGE city centre bridge crossed by 21,000 drivers every day, will close for 12 hours this weekend.

Tower Bridge, one of the country’s most beloved landmarks, will be roped off for 12 hours on Sunday because of the London Marathon.

50,000 courageous runners are set to take to the streets of the capital this weekend, cheered on by thousands of spectators.

The 26.2 mile race will start in Greenwich, finishing in St James’ Park.

The iconic London route showcases some of the capital’s most popular areas including Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.

A number of roads will be closed on April 27, to make way for the hoards of runners.

Tower Bridge, which is at the 12 and a half mile, will be closed from 8am to 8:30pm.

This means that drivers will have to find alternative travel routes, such as taking a diversion or using public transport such as the London Underground.

London underground services in central London will be running as normal, but are expected to be incredibly busy.

Buses travelling on roads affected by the marathon will either be diverted or will not run at all.

Other popular roads that will be closed include Trafalgar Road, which will close at 7am and reopen at 4pm, and Parliament Square, which will close at 7:30am and reopen at 10pm.

In 2024, Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao won the men’s race in a time of a second over 2hrs 4min.

Meanwhile, a competitive race saw Peres Jepchirchir win the elite women’s category with a new women’s only world record.

Although Tower Bridge will be closed to drivers on Sunday, it is one of the best places for spectators to watch friends and family.

The race doubles back on itself across the bridge, so spectators will get to spot racers twice from this location.
