ICRC Warns: Migrant return worsen poverty in Afghanistan
The ICRC reports rising poverty in Afghanistan, as thousands of returning migrants face dire conditions amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned of a growing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, as approximately five thousand migrants return to the country each week. This surge in migration is exacerbating the already dire situation, with millions facing extreme poverty and displacement. The ICRC emphasized that over 50% of the Afghan population now relies on humanitarian aid.
On April 21, the ICRC reported that around two thousand Afghan migrants are entering the country daily through the Torkham border crossing. The continued influx of returnees from neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, has significantly strained Afghanistan’s resources, further escalating the humanitarian needs in the country.
In response to the crisis, the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society has launched an emergency disaster response fund to assist 1.7 million returnees. The ICRC has been collaborating with local authorities to provide vital health services, including medical care and health assessments for those returning at the Torkham border.
The Red Cross also highlighted that the situation is particularly challenging as Afghanistan is already grappling with a deep-rooted humanitarian emergency. The country’s ongoing conflicts, economic instability, and the COVID-19 pandemic have left millions vulnerable, further complicating efforts to provide adequate aid and support to those in need.
Additionally, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that between April 1 and 11, at least 44,900 Afghan refugees returned from Pakistan. This influx of migrants is placing additional strain on Afghanistan’s already fragile healthcare, economic, and social systems.
The ongoing return of Afghan migrants amidst an already challenging humanitarian situation calls for immediate international support.
