New Iberia officials pledge to keep city safe
NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- Officials in New Iberia have posted a video on social media pledging to "do what it takes to keep New Iberia safe."
New Iberia Mayor Freddie DeCourt, District Attorney Michael Haik, Police Chief Todd D'Albor, Mayor Pro-Tem Ricky Gonsoulin and city councilmembers David Merrill, Brooke Marcotte, Warren White and Ron Davis posted a joint video to reassure residents.
"Our community is a vibrant, resilient community, full of positive energy," DeCourt said. "Positive does not mean we're not aware we have issues. Our positive energy means that we know the best days for New Iberia are ahead of us."
All of those who spoke reiterated their committment to reduce crime in the city.
"Evil will not win. There is no room for non-believers," DeCourt said. "We're here, this is our home, and none of us are leaving. We commit to do whatever we can to keep New Iberia safe."
Haik was sworn in March 27 to replace longtime DA Bo Duhe, who died March 15, in the 16th Judicial District. That district includes Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.
"I am committed to do everything within the district attorney's power to make our cities, our streets, our neighborhoods safer," Haik said. "My office is working close(ly) with all agencies from Arnaudville to Amelia to ensure that those who are illegally carrying gun are arrested, are prosecuted, are convicted and are sent away to hard labor sentences for a very, very long time."
"I was born here, I was raised here, I raised my family here, I live here. I have skin in the game. I'm not going away."
D'Albor said the community can help in the effort to reduce gun violence.
"We're asking the public, our community, to also be aware of your surroundings," D'Albor said. "With that awareness, if you see something that doesn't look or feel right, call our department, call any agency where you're within that jurisdiction, and let them know what you see."
White's message was a succinct one.
"Please y'all, put the guns away," he said. "Stop the killing."
