Latest charge dropped against Dennis Drue
COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A recent charge brought against Dennis Drue has been dropped, according to the family of one of the victims in the fatal 2012 crash. Drue was responsible for killing two Shenendehowa students and injuring two other high school students in a crash on the Northway.
A false personation charge was dropped Monday night. Drue's lawyer admitted his client gave a false name to police back in March; however, when warned by police that using more false names would result in higher charges, Drue gave his real name.
The district attorney confirmed the sequence of events was on bodycam footage, so the case was dismissed. If Drue had continued, then it would have been a misdemeanor.
Drue previously served nine years in prison for the crash that killed Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers. In a statement sent to NEWS10, Mike Stewart, the father of Chris Stewart, said:
“Both families are extremely disappointed that the case was dismissed tonight due to a technical issue as to when exactly Drue lied to the police officers. This misdemeanor charge was an important lead into his upcoming parole hearing. The families will be present at that hearing and will be heard from in front of Drue, Drue’s attorney and the Judge.”
Drue was out on parole when Colonie Police found him at the Crossings Park after hours and behind the wheel of a running car. He was arrested after giving police a fake name.
He will remain in the Albany County Jail until his next parole hearing. Both the Stewart and Rivers families plan to be at his parole hearing.
