Teens killed in Saturday crash were students leaving Shawnee Mission South prom
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The two teenagers who were killed in a head-on crash in Overland Park, Kansas, over the weekend were Shawnee Mission South High School students heading home from prom, according to a spokesperson with the school district.
Shawnee Mission South High School Principal Todd Dain said in a letter to families on Sunday that the teens were identified as two students: 17-year-old José Placensia Castañeda and 18-year-old Itzel Guerra.
"As you can imagine, it will be an extremely difficult time for the Castañeda and Guerra families," Dain wrote. "Our hearts go out to them, and we will stand with them as they work to process their grief."
The school said district staff members will be on hand to help students who are grieving.
The crash happened on April 19 around 11:20 p.m.
According to a crash log from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Placensia Castañeda and Guerra were driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla southbound on Metcalf Avenue, between West 58th Street and Johnson Drive, when it crossed the center median into oncoming traffic.
As Placensia Castañeda drove in the opposite lanes, two women -- a 44-year-old driver and a 41-year-old passenger-- were heading northbound on Metcalf Avenue in a 2015 Kia Optima when they were hit head-on.
Both teens were killed in the crash, and the 44-year-old driver of the Kia was seriously injured. The passenger in the Kia had minor injuries.
KHP has not released the cause of the crash.
