$3,000 Cash Stolen from U.S. Minister’s Bag in Washington
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem became the victim of a theft Sunday evening while dining with her family at a restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C., according to federal officials.
The incident occurred at the Capital Burger restaurant, where Noem was having dinner with her children and grandchildren during an Easter weekend visit. According to law enforcement sources, an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask was seen on security footage removing Noem’s purse and exiting the premises.
The stolen bag reportedly contained approximately $3,000 in cash, her driver’s license, passport, apartment keys, medication, makeup bag, blank checks, and an official Department of Homeland Security access badge. The Secret Service, which is tasked with protecting high-ranking officials, is now leading an investigation into the matter.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that the cash had been withdrawn to pay for Easter gifts, meals, and family activities during the visit.
“The Secretary’s entire family was in town for the holiday, and the funds were intended for personal family expenses,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about rising property crime in the U.S. capital. While violent crime reportedly hit a 30-year low last year, theft and non-violent offenses remain a significant concern for both residents and visitors.
The Secret Service is reviewing security footage and attempting to trace any unauthorized use of Noem’s financial instruments or government credentials. No arrests have been made as of Monday evening.
The case has also reignited political discourse surrounding public safety in Washington. Former President Donald Trump has previously criticized the city’s leadership, calling for stronger crime-prevention efforts and more visible police presence. Last month, he proposed a federal task force to enhance safety and security in the capital, saying, “Washington, D.C., must become CLEAN and SAFE again.”
Despite being under full-time federal protection, the incident highlights that even high-ranking officials are not immune to the challenges of urban crime. Authorities have yet to provide additional details as the investigation continues.
