Over 100 migrants freed from Pakistani jails and returned to Afghanistan
Over 100 Afghan migrants were freed from Pakistani jails and have returned to Afghanistan, following their brief detention.
The Ministry of Refugees and Returnees has announced the release of 115 Afghan migrants from Pakistani prisons. The release occurred on April 21, when the migrants returned through the Spin Boldak border crossing.
According to the statement, the migrants had been detained in various regions of Pakistan and spent between one to three days in detention before being freed. These migrants were part of a larger group of Afghan nationals who were arrested in Pakistan for illegal residency.
Over the past week, hundreds of Afghan migrants have been released from Pakistani prisons and returned to Afghanistan. This is part of a broader effort by the Afghan government to ensure the safe return of its citizens.
Afghan migrants have been detained mainly for lacking legal residence documents or using Afghan citizenship cards, which Pakistan no longer recognizes.
Earlier, the Ministry of Refugees and Returnees reported that 175 Afghan prisoners were released from Pakistani jails and returned home. Meanwhile, Pakistan has begun the second phase of deporting Afghan refugees, with 33,258 migrants expelled through the Torkham border.
However, the issue of illegal Afghan migrants in Pakistan persists, with Pakistani authorities continuing to expel migrants. As of now, over 84,000 Afghans have been deported in less than a month, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan nationals in Pakistan.
This trend reflects the complex situation of Afghan migration, where issues of legal status and border management continue to cause tension between the two countries. The return of these migrants highlights the urgent need for improved cooperation on migration and border security.
