Update – Haynes was rewarded bronze

IT’S A WAIT and see to determine whether Barbados’ Under-20 long jumper Teon Haynes will be awarded the gold medal for his leap of 7.56 metres after a controversial end to the event on Sunday morning at the 52nd CARIFTA Games here at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Haynes, who injured his right knee during his fourth jump, left the jumping arena, accompanied by an official for treatment but on return after a bandage was applied to the affected area, was only initially allowed one more attempt instead of two.
After a protest from the Barbados camp, he was eventually allowed to complete a sixth jump when the competition had already ended a few minutes earlier.
Jumping under protest, Haynes surpassed the efforts of Jamaican Michael-Andre Edwards (7.41) and Bahamian William McKinney (7.39) to put himself in line for gold, should the protest be successful.
If not, Haynes, in his final year of competition at the CARIFTA level, will have to settle for the bronze medal with a leap of 7.35 metres on his first jump. He also bagged bronze last year in the same event in Grenada.
Haynes fouled his second and third attempts, running through into the sand pit and only leaping 7.04 metres on his fourth jump.
The other Barbadian in the event, Aaron Massiah was eliminated after the first three rounds of jumps when he managed 6.80 metres on his opening jump but fouled the next two.
Meanwhile, only Nyema Taylor ran in the opening 100-metre hurdles event of the Under-20 Girls’ Heptathlon as the other Barbadian entrant, Tia Applewaite appeared to suffer a measure of discomfort while warming up after hitting a hurdle and did not take her place in Lane 2.
