Five major spring cleaning mistakes that could devalue your home – and what you should be doing instead

SPRING is a time for new beginnings, and many people use it as a chance to give their home a fresh start.

If you’re thinking about giving your space a spring clean, make sure to avoid these easy mistakes.

According to the experts at Locksmith Croydon, there are five common errors that can actually devalue your property.

So before you dig out your cleaning caddy, make sure you read up on what to do instead.

The professionals revealed that overusing cleaning chemicals in your home is a big no-go.

They explained that harsh chemicals can cause irreversible damage to materials in your home.

The experts gave the example of abrasive scrubbing on natural stone counter tops, like granite or marble, which can cause scratches or dullness.

Meanwhile, strong chemical cleaners can discolour wooden floors, strip protective coatings from furniture, or weaken carpet fibres, leading to costly repairs.

Instead, the pros recommended opting for a gentler, non-abrasive cleaner.

They suggested a pH-neutral stone cleaner, mild soapy water for wood, and natural alternatives like vinegar or baking soda.

And remember to always test a new cleaner on a small, hidden area first.

Next, they advised against pressure washing everything when sprucing up the exterior of your home.

While pressure washing is effective for patios and driveways it can damage delicate surfaces.

It may be tempting to tackle grimy brickwork, roof tiles, or wooden decking with a high pressure washer but this can actually erode mortar, strip coatings, and cause water intrusion.

This can lead to mould and structural issues down the line.

Instead, use a soft wash method with a garden hose or low-pressure nozzle and gentle cleaning agents for delicate materials.

The experts also advised against painting over issues as a short-term solution.

The household items you’re not cleaning often enough

IF you want to ensure your home is squeaky clean, you'll need to listen up. Below are the household items you're forgetting to clean, and how to get them sparkling...

Remote Controls: Wipe with a disinfectant cloth. Use a cotton bud for crevices.

Light Switches: Wipe with a disinfectant wipe. Use a mild soap solution for tough stains.

Door Handles: Clean with an antibacterial spray. Wipe down regularly.

Underneath and Behind Appliances: Vacuum or sweep regularly. Mop with a suitable cleaner.

Shower Curtains and Liners: Wash in the washing machine. Use a bleach solution for stubborn mildew.

Kitchen Sponges and Dishcloths: Microwave damp sponges for one minute. Wash dishcloths in the washing machine.

Computer Keyboards and Mice: Use compressed air to remove debris. Wipe with a disinfectant wipe.

Glossing over damp spots or cracks is a temporary fix which can backfire.

While it may temporarily hide discolouration, the moisture trapped beneath fresh paint can lead to peeling, bubbling, and an even bigger repair job later.

The professionals suggested identifying and fixing the root cause first.

You should make sure to repair leaks, treat mold, and seal cracks before applying a new coat of paint.

For their next tip, the experts explained why over-cleaning your carpets can actually do more harm than good.

Deep-cleaning can be beneficial, but excessive scrubbing or over-saturating can lead to mould growth, unpleasant odours, and shrinkage of certain carpet types.

Harsh brushing can also damage fibres, leaving your carpets look worn and frayed.

Instead, use a professional-grade steam cleaner or sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming to refresh and lift odours.

Ensure proper ventilation to allow it to dry completely.

Finally, don’t go all out on the DIY to mask underlying issues in your home.

While tackling minor repairs can feel satisfying and money-savvy, homeowners should avoid covering up major problems.

Repainting over water stains, hiding cracks in walls with filler, or fixing broken tiles without addressing the root cause can lead to larger structural or plumbing issues over time.

Before you carry out any cosmetic fixes, identify and resolve the underlying issue.

Hidden damage will eventually be uncovered during professional inspections and can devalue your property.
