Sports briefs: College of Marin uses late rally to stun Solano

The College of Marin baseball team needed a late rally to ensure it would stay in sole possession of first place in the Bay Valley Conference standings with a week to play.

The Mariners scored one in the seventh inning, eight in the eighth, and three more in the ninth to secure a 16-9 victory over Solano on Friday. COM trailed by five runs heading into the seventh inning.

Caden Sta Maria, Logan Fiene, and Dante Caiati all hit home runs as part of the late rally. COM got big games from Wyatt Davis (four hits, three RBIs), Sta Maria (three hits, four RBIs, three runs), Fiene (three hits, an RBI, three runs), and Caiati (two hits, three RBIs).

COM (26-10-1, 16-2 Bay Valley) got back to its winning ways after losing to Solano 10-5 — a result that snapped COM’s 10-game win streak.

Laney and Los Medanos — winners of seven and nine consecutive games, respectively — enter the final week tied for second place with identical 15-3 conference records. COM opens a three-game series against Los Medanos at home on Tuesday. Laney plays three games against last-place Contra Costa (1-17).

Prep baseball

Will Rothstein had the lone RBI of the day for San Domenico in a 16-1 loss to University on Friday. The Red devils scored 13 runs in the first inning.

College softball

Taylor Rodriguez had three hits, including a home run, and pitched a complete game to help Dominican University split a home doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific with an 8-3 victory in Game 2 on Friday.

Rodriguez drove in three runs and scores three more to pace the Penguins (29-21, 20-13 PacWest) offensively. Rodriguez allowed nine hits and three earned runs over seven innings while improving her record to 16-5 this season. Dominican scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Tiare Guerrero had three hits for Dominican in the first game as the Sharks (17-33, 11-21) won 4-0. The two teams wrap up a three-game series at noon Saturday at Dominican.

The Penguins are eyeing a conference tournament bid as the final week of the season approaches. Dominican needs to finish ahead of Hawaii-Hilo (18-14) to ensure itself a spot in the four-team field.

Prep softball

San Domenico freshman Rory Brunetti hit a three-run blast, but the Panthers fell to Emery, 13-5, on Thursday. San Domenico sophomore Amy Le hit her first career double.

Boys tennis

The Branson School got singles wins from Chase Hoeveler, Ishwar Jayaraman and Finn Higgins at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively, and swept doubles play to beat host Tam, 6-1, on Thursday. Tam’s Witt Bulger got the win at No. 1 singles against the Bulls’ Tommie Higgins.

  • San Rafael came out on top, 5-2, as the Bulldogs matched their best lineup against the top players from Novato on Thursday. Forrest Reilly earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Hornets’ Diego Seligman-Tovar at No. 1 singles, and the Bulldogs also got singles wins from Roman Krumrey and Avi Levine. San Rafael clinched the win with pair of doubles victories. Alex Kirsten gave the Hornets a win at No. 2 singles.
  • Archie Williams High swept doubles play and won the top three singles matches for a 6-1 victory over Terra Linda in Fairfax on Thursday. Fin Donnelly, Teo Donnelly and Dylan Donner won at Nos. 1-3 singles for the Peregrine Falcons. The Trojans’ En-Yu Liu picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Porter Cook at No. 4 singles.

Girls swimming

Archie Williams High picked up a pair of wins in the pool Thursday, beating San Rafael, 113-52, and San Marin, 102-66. Double winners for the Peregrine Falcons were Holly Hovey (50 free, 100 free) and Zoe Cass-Lein (200 free, 100 back).

Boys golf

Low medalist Ben Friedman carded a 31 at Mill Valley Golf Course on Thursday to lead Tam High to a 167-234 victory over Terra Linda. Abe Willard and Paxon Miller tied at 33, and Max Berg and Elliot Dasovich tied at 35 for the Red-tailed Hawks. Matty Nelson led the Trojans with a 41.

  • Oskar Valiagua came around at 40 at Presidio Golf Club on Thursday to lead San Domenico, but the Panthers fell to University, 162-175, in the Bay Counties League matchup. Noah Penny shot a 44 for the Panthers.
