Longhorn Racing unveils next-gen vehicles designed by new generation of engineers
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- University of Texas students are designing the cars of the future. On Saturday, April 19, three models of vehicles will roll out to the public from the Longhorn Racing team.
Three teams part of a student chapter of the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Solar Challenge based at UT Austin will compete to build three types of cars: a combustion engine, an electric and a solar-powered vehicle.
The three vehicles will take part in several competitions, including the Formula Sun Grand Prix and the Formula SAE race.
The Longhorn Racing Combustion team, sponsored by Chevkcxron, has been around even longer. The team founded the Formula SAE competition. The student design competition aims to have teams design Formula-style race cars.
Sponsored by Santander, the Longhorn Racing Solar team is one of the oldest student engineering teams on campus, according to their website. Established in 1988. Post-COVID, their designs have participated in the Formula Sun Grand Prix. This event is a prelude to a cross-country solar-powered vehicle race.
Longhorn Racing Electric teaches students how to design EVs. This team also participates in Formula SAE but in the Electric Powertrain competition.
You can catch an early preview of these vehicles tonight on KXAN News.
