The simple duvet hack that’s perfect for killing nasty germs this spring – and it won’t cost you a penny

A SNEAKY duvet hack that’s perfect for killing germs has been revealed and it is completely free.

Chucking your entire duvet in the washing machine can be time-consuming and leaves you with a soggy blanket.

A great way to tackle some of those germs is by airing your duvet outside[/caption]

Leaving your blanket out for around five hours can help keep it clean[/caption]

If you don’t want to be dealing with chunky bedding dripping through your home, there is a way to target bacteria without using water.

Steven Szary, from My Luxury Sleep Shop, suggests laying your duvet outside, in a clean place, under the sun.

He explained: “Leave your duvet out for several hours (four to five is about right) and it’s best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn’t too harsh.

“A little bit of sun is good though as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs.”

By popping your blanket on the washing line it is subject to UV rays in sunlight – which are really beneficial when it comes to cleaning.

These rays are effective at killing off germs and will leave your duvet feeling and smelling fresher than before.

The average person sleeps for around eight hours a night which means your bedding is getting more than 50 hours of use per week.

Dust and dirt from the day, as well as sweat and body oils, can get caught up in the sheet leaving your bed unclean.

Airing it out can kill off some of these pesky pathogens and leave your bedroom smelling fresh as a daisy.

HOW TO AIR OUT A DUVET

Before you run outside with all of your bedding, there are a couple of things to check first.

Most importantly, take a peek at the weather – the last thing you want when avoiding washing your duvet is to accidentally pop it out in the rain.

The perfect day would be a dry, sunny and breezy day, if it hasn’t rained for a few days that’s even better.

Steven said: “If it’s cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding.”

Next, check how strong the sun is – it’s best to wait until the late afternoon when the rays are more gentle.

Ideally, it’s sunny enough to kill off bacteria but not so strong that the fabric gets damaged.

Similar to the way harsh sunlight can damage skin and metals, it can also affect the fabric.

Sunshine can either discolour it or leave it feeling stiff and uncomfortable.

Once you’re all set you can pop your duvet on a clothes-line, drying rack, fence or even a garden table – anywhere it can be spread out and remain clean.

Let your bedding soak up the sunshine for around five hours and then it’s ready to go.
