Pakistan’s Envoy says High-Level talks with Taliban have resumed
Pakistan’s envoy confirmed that high-level talks with the Taliban have resumed, signaling renewed diplomatic engagement between both parties.
On April 17, 2025, Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, announced that high-level interactions with the Taliban have resumed after a long pause. This marks a significant shift in diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and the Taliban, indicating an evolving relationship and potential for deeper cooperation.
Sadiq Khan elaborated that Pakistan, in consultation with the Taliban, is working on developing a framework for tripartite and multilateral relations. This framework will involve key regional players, including Afghanistan, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, signaling a broader regional engagement aimed at stabilizing and fostering cooperation in the region.
The Pakistani representative also mentioned that consultations have already taken place with China’s Special Representative regarding this new framework. This highlights the importance of regional collaboration and the role of neighboring countries in addressing Afghanistan’s security and economic challenges, particularly in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power.
These statements followed Sadiq Khan’s participation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Committee meeting in Kabul, which focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for regional cooperation. The discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region and the necessity of involving multiple stakeholders for successful collaboration.
In addition, the Russian Supreme Court temporarily removed the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations on April 17, 2025. This decision reflects a shift in Russia’s stance toward the Taliban, opening the door for further diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Kabul, despite ongoing international sanctions. However, the Russian government has made it clear that it will continue to adhere to UN sanctions on Taliban officials.
The regional dynamics surrounding Afghanistan are evolving, with Pakistan and its neighbors seeking to play a more active role in shaping the country’s future. The development of a multilateral framework involving Afghanistan, China, Russia, and other key players could pave the way for greater stability and economic opportunities in the region.
The resumption of high-level talks between Pakistan and the Taliban, alongside the temporary removal of the Taliban from Russia’s terrorist list, signals a shift toward more practical diplomatic approaches. However, the success of these initiatives will depend on the ability of regional actors to cooperate effectively and address the complex challenges facing Afghanistan.
