China seeking stronger EU partnership to counter US economic policies
China is seeking a partnership with the EU to counter U.S. economic policies, aiming to strengthen economic and political ties.
China’s ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, emphasized China’s desire to strengthen economic ties with the European Union, calling it a vital partner. He also expressed China’s willingness to enhance collaboration, particularly in the face of what Beijing perceives as America’s “economic exploitation.”
In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, April 15, Yao Jing asserted that China does not view the European Union as a rival or enemy. He highlighted the importance of focusing on a mutually beneficial partnership between China and the EU, contrasting this approach with the recent policies of the United States.
He also praised the bloc’s multilateral approach in foreign policy, particularly in countering the isolationist agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Yao Jing’s statements come after the recent visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Beijing, aimed at reinforcing economic relations between China and Europe. This visit is seen as a part of broader efforts to deepen economic and political ties between China and the European Union.
In response to U.S. warnings about Europe’s growing ties with China, including a statement by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce calling such alliances self-destructive, Yao Jing firmly rejected this view. He countered by saying, “In fact, the U.S. is cutting its own throat by isolating others.”
China is actively seeking to counter U.S. economic policies, including tariffs, by fostering stronger commercial and political relationships with European countries. Yao Jing reassured European nations that China’s doors remain open for future cooperation, building on its successful partnership with Spain.
China’s call for stronger ties with the EU comes amidst escalating tensions with the United States over trade policies and tariffs. Beijing’s message to Europe stresses mutual respect and cooperation, positioning the EU as a critical economic partner.
The future of EU-China relations could significantly influence global trade dynamics, with China aiming to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce reliance on the U.S. amidst ongoing trade disputes.
