Biden slams Trump’s Social Security Cuts in first Public Speech
Joe Biden, the former President of the United States, strongly criticized the policies of the Donald Trump administration regarding the Social Security system in his first public speech after leaving office.
On Tuesday, April 15, Biden addressed the “Supporters, Advisors, and Representatives of the Disabled” (ACRD) conference in Chicago, describing the current administration’s actions as “destructive” and “devastating.” He warned that widespread cuts to Social Security’s budget and workforce are threatening the lives of millions of Americans.
According to The New York Times, in his 30-minute speech, Biden indirectly accused the Trump administration of causing “unprecedented damage and destruction” in under 100 days. He stated, “This new administration has attacked Social Security with an axe, laying off 7,000 employees, including some of the most experienced officials, which has paralyzed the agency’s services.”
Biden called Social Security a “sacred promise” vital for over 73 million Americans, including seniors and people with disabilities. He pointed out the reduction in the IT workforce at the Social Security Administration, which, according to him, has disrupted the agency’s website and prevented people from accessing their accounts.
Continuing his criticism, the former president questioned, “Why is this happening? Why have they targeted Social Security now? They’re following Silicon Valley’s startup mantra: Move fast and break things. Well, they’ve certainly broken some things.”
Biden’s speech coincided with “Social Security Action Day,” organized by Democratic leaders in Congress. In a joint statement, they announced, “Democrats across the country are fighting to stop the Republicans’ plan to destroy Social Security. The firing of experienced employees and closure of local offices is making it harder for seniors and people with disabilities to access their benefits.”
In response, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt, before Biden’s speech, stated that President Trump remains committed to protecting Social Security benefits for “law-abiding, tax-paying Americans.” She also sarcastically remarked, “I was shocked to see Biden speaking late at night; I thought his bedtime was much earlier.”
The ongoing debate over Social Security underscores the stark division between the political parties. As both sides stake their claims, the future of this vital program remains uncertain, with millions of Americans anxiously awaiting the outcome.
