Huge energy firm with 7million customers giving out 50% off energy TODAY

THOUSANDS of households could see their energy bills slashed in half for a short time – if they’re quick.

A huge firm with 7 million customers is dishing out the deal for a very limited time.

British Gas has revealed it is giving customers the chance to save some serious cash.

But there’s a catch – it only lasts two hours, and only for those in the know.

From 11am to 1pm today (Wednesday 16th April), British Gas is running its second Green Flex event of the month – slashing electricity rates by 50%.

It comes after a surge in renewable energy from blustery weather.

However its only available to PeakSave customers – a rewards system which is free to join.

PeakSave customers can earn credits on their accounts by shifting their energy usage away from peak times.

PeakSave Green Flex events offer half price electricity for one or two hour bursts when the sun’s blazing or the wind’s howling, with British Gas using its own forecasts to choose the time slots.

Customers eligible for the deal will receive an email and must opt in to take part.

So far, British Gas has paid over £20.5 million to more than 900,000 customers taking part in the scheme.

And it’s not just a one-off – PeakSave customers already bag half-price power every Sunday from 11am to 4pm, without lifting a finger.

But shifting your chores – like laundry, vacuuming or cooking – into the discounted hours could see your bill nosedive even further.

The energy giant said: “This is the energy provider’s second Green Flex event of the month and fourth event of the year, helping customers make savings on their energy bills.

“The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, and all savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills,” the company confirmed.

“So far, British Gas has paid over £23 million to over 920,000 customers taking part in the scheme, who have collectively shifted 27,765 MWH of energy,” a spokesperson added.

To get involved, customers can visit the British Gas website.

However, you must already be an existing British Gas customer and have a smart meter installed.

You can then register your interest by logging into your account and clicking the PeakSave tab, where you’ll have to fill in some quick information.

The provider will then give you alerts when Green Flex events are coming up – helping you to make huge cuts to your energy bill.

WHAT DO OTHER PROVIDERS OFFER?

British Gas is not the only energy provider looking to support customers to shift their use outside of peak hours.

EDF Energy

EDF’s Sunday Saver challenge gives you free electricity to use on Sundays if you shift your energy use away from weekday peak times.

Move 40% of your usage out of peak hours and you could earn up to 16 free hours of power the following weekend.

To take part, you’ll need a smart meter set to half-hourly readings – just update your settings via your EDF MyAccount, then join the challenge through the Energy Hub.

Ovo Energy

Ovo’s Power Move challenge could land you up to £2,000 of free energy.

Use 85% of your power during off-peak hours, and for every month you keep peak usage under 15%, you’ll be entered into a prize draw.

Winners include five £2,000 prizes, 200 £50 rewards, and 22,850 chances to bag £2 of energy credit.

You can sign up at the Power Move section of the OVO website

Scottish Power

Scottish Power is dishing out half-price electricity every weekend.

Power Saver customers get 50% off electricity used between 11am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with surprise weekday events too.

You’ll need a smart meter and to register as a Power Saver to get the perks.

E.ON Next

E.ON is handing out free electricity on every Bank Holiday until March 2026 – with the savings credited to your account after each one.

The offer’s exclusive to customers on the firm’s Pledge tariff, and the average household is expected to save £3.50 per Bank Holiday.

The next free day is Good Friday on April 18.

Octopus Energy

Octopus Energy customers on the Octoplus plan can grab free electricity when wholesale prices dip below zero.

These “Saving Sessions” last an hour, and if you use more than usual, you’ll even get credits back on your bill.

Anyone with a smart meter will get a heads-up the day before.

4 ways to keep your energy bills low

Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.

1. Turn your heating down by one degree

You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.

2. Switch appliances and lights off

It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills

3. Install a smart meter

Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.

4. Consider switching energy supplier

No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.
