Sports briefs: Bayon, McCuskey-Hay lead Marin contingent at Arcadia
Redwood High’s Antonio Bayon finished second in the decathlon and San Rafael resident Ellie McCuskey-Hay placed in the top five in both sprints to highlight performances by the Marin contingent at the Arcadia Invitational over the weekend.
Bayon scored 7,042 points behind only Bellarmine College Prep’s Joshua Haven, who had 7,133. Bayon placed first in several events in the decathlon — the javelin, the discus, the pole vault, and the shot put. Bayon also placed second in the long jump, high jump, and 110-meter hurdles.
McCuskey-Hay, who runs track for St. Ignatius, was in the invitational heats for both sprints, placing fifth in the 100 meters in 11.54 and fourth in the 200 in 24.17.
Redwood’s Julia Bayon ran a personal best 11.90 to place seventh in the open heat of the 100 meters. Redwood also sent Annalise Horn, who placed 10th in the long jump open division with a mark of 17 feet, 6.5 inches, plus Kate Kozubik, who finished 23rd in the 3,200 open division with a time of 11:07.98.
Archie Williams’ Ani Steig competed in three events, placing sixth in the 1,500 meter open en route division (4:38.33), sixth in the 1,600 open en route (4:55.67), and sixth in the open mile (4:57.39). Tam’s Emma Gardner competed in the same three races, finishing 21st, 16th, and 16th, respectively.
Tam’s William Freas finished second in the rising stars pole vault with a personal record of 15′,4″. Tam’s team of Lucas Ruark, Cooper Hatch, Caeden Gardner, and Gilby Fillat placed 11th in the 4,000 distance medley relay invitational.
College baseball
San Marin High grad Josh Martin’s RBI-single to center field in the bottom of the first opened the floodgates for Santa Rosa Junior College in Tuesday’s 12-1 home victory over Sacramento City College. Martin is batting .276 with four home runs and 11 doubles through 33 games in his sophomore season. The Panthers (33-1, 18-1) head to Sacramento for the second of this week’s three-game set.
- Redwood High grad Ben Resnick and Kenyon College (10-11, 3-3 NCAC) are scheduled to take on conference rival Ohio Wesleyan (8-18, 1-7 NCAC) in a Wednesday doubleheader. Resnick, a sophomore, is hitting .276 in 19 games, fifth for the Owls. He has four doubles after an extra-base hit during Saturday’s 4-3 loss to DePauw. Resnick hit a grand slam March 29 against No. 5 Denison in a 19-9 loss.
Men’s golf
Sophomore Joseph Berggren and junior Daniel Marmorstein tied at 7-over par during the two-day Hanny Stanislaus Invitational to lead Dominican University in the Penguins’ final warmup for the PacWest Championships, which begin April 21.
Amateur golf
William Collins earned the dubious distinction of having his name engraved on the DFL Cup in a match play loser-take-all competition at Peacock Gap Golf Club. Collins lost to San Domenico coach and Peacock Gap pro Russell Kessler by a 2 and 1 margin in the finals of the offbeat — but popular — local event.
Boys golf
Branson got a balanced effort as four players carded 36s as the Bulls won a tri-match against Redwood and Rafael with a score of 181 at Meadow Club on Monday. Redwood, led by medalist James Hamil’s 34, shot a 182. San Rafael, led by Cameron Moayedi’s 37, shot a 204.
- Marin Catholic picked up a pair of victories against Tam and Archie Williams at Meadow Club on Monday. MC’s Theo Anderson was the medalist with a 32 followed by Rhys Jones and Jasper smith, who both shot 33s. MC shot 167 as a team. Ben Friedman shot low for Tam with a 33 as the Red-tailed Hawks shot a 179. Yousef Abuieda’s 35 led the way for Archie Williams, which shot a 201.
Boys tennis
Redwood High juggled its lineup during Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over Novato. Lukas Berger, playing No. 1 singles for the Giants, earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over the Hornets’ Diego Seligman-Tovar. Josh Friedman and Lucas Zhang gave Redwood singles wins at Nos. 3 and 4. Novato’s Alex Kirsten battled to a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win over Everett Gross at No. 2 singles.
- Branson benefitted from a pair of walkovers and won a pair of singles and doubles contests in Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over San Rafael. Ryder Teakle and Brad Yen gave the Bulls wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. The Bulldogs’ Forrest Reilly fought for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6) win over Griffin Cooper at No. 1 singles.
- Forrest Reilly picked up the win at No.1 singles to lead San Rafael to its first win of the season, a 6-1 victory against Novato on Monday. Roman Krumrey and Avi Levine also had wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively for the Bulldogs. Alex Kirsten had the lone win for Novato at No. 2 singles.
Beach volleyball
San Domenico picked up a 2-1 victory over Maria Carrillo High on Monday. Winning teams for the Panthers were Ashley Bryan and Sasha Lyra Stevens, as well as Harley Vuong and Ayla Henry.
Boys lacrosse
Parker Napp scored four goals to lead host Novato past San Rafael, 17-3, on Tuesday. Napp added a pair of assists, while Tyler Smith had three goals and five assists. The Hornets (7-5, 4-2 MCAL) also got three goals and an assists from Beckett Smith, as well as two goals each from Brian Yates, CJ Castro and Johnny Roman. Nikolai Posada capped the scoring for the Hornets.
