Aimee Lou Wood is rising in the Emmy odds after the ‘SNL’ teeth joke
Aimee Lou Wood is getting the last laugh.
After Saturday Night Live spoofed The White Lotus last weekend with a pre-taped sketch called "The White Potus," which reimagined the HBO characters as deranged members of President Donald Trump's inner circle, Wood took to Instagram to publicly call out the show for the way it made fun of her intelligence and her teeth. In the days since, the English actress says she has received an apology from SNL — she has also received an outpouring of support from fans, gaining more than 130,000 Instagram followers. Her Emmy odds have also gotten a boost, jumping from seventh to sixth place in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actress predictions.
Neither NBC nor SNL has yet commented on Wood's criticism or to confirm that a representative from the show did indeed contact the actress and apologize for the sketch.
In "The White Potus," the week's host, Jon Hamm, played Robert F. Kennedy Jr. channeling Walton Goggins's Rick. He wonders aloud how removing fluoride from the drinking water would affect people's teeth. "Fluoride? What's that?" asks Sarah Sherman in the guise of Wood's Chelsea, with exaggerated fake buckteeth. The character then gets distracted and shouted, "Oh look, a monkey!"
Wood, who has openly discussed being bullied about her teeth throughout her life, took to Instagram to address the "mean and unfunny" sketch. "I am not thin-skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it's clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride," she wrote. "I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth. I don't mind caricature — I understand that's what SNL is. But the rest of the skit is punching up, and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on."
Hours later, she posted without elaboration, "I've had apologies from SNL." She also shared many of the positive comments sent by fans in the aftermath of her criticism.
Back in March, while appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, Wood said it "feels so lovely" to be embraced by fans. "It's a real full-circle moment after being bullied for my teeth forever, and now people are clapping in an audience because I've got these gnashers." Although she later told British GQ, that White Lotus mastermind Mike White had to fight to cast and and she feared it was because HBO thought she was too ugly.
Public awareness in the wake of Wood calling out SNL has no doubt helped her climb up our Emmy predictions. She's currently in the top six for Best Drama Supporting Actress, with the five above her being Carrie Coon (The White Lotus), Parker Posey (The White Lotus), Allison Janney (The Diplomat), Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us), and Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus).
Wood's Chelsea is a free spirit who travels to Thailand with her much older boyfriend, Rick; she remains devoted to him through the entire third season of The White Lotus. Despite Chelsea's repeated pleas, Rick can't let go of his past traumas, and it winds up proving fatal for both of them. She is arguably the biggest fan-favorite character to emerge from Season 3.
SNL's "The White Potus" sketch from April 12 featured more than a dozen celebrities playing notable figures. In addition to Hamm and Sherman, James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump as Jason Isaacs' Timothy; Chloe Fineman played Melania Trump as Posey's Victoria; Scarlett Johansson played Ivanka Trump as Sarah Catherine Hook's Piper; Mikey Day played Donald Trump Jr. as Patrick Schwarzenegger's Saxon, Alex Moffat played Eric Trump as Sam Nivola's Lochlan, Jon Gries played Howard Lutnick as Gries' Gary/Greg; and Lizzo played Rothwell's Belinda. In addition, Heidi Gardner played Kristi Noem, Ashley Padilla played Pam Bondi, Marcello Hernández played Marco Rubio, Beck Bennett played Vladimir Putin, Andrew Dismukes played Uncle Sam, and Kenan Thompson played Tiger Woods.
