Three juveniles arrested for allegedly burglarizing Corinth museum
CORINTH, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office says they arrested three "juvenile delinquents" for burglary and criminal mischief at the The Hudson River Mill Museum on Monday. The arrests followed an active vandalism complaint at the site nicknamed the IP Museum, the former home of the International Paper Company.
“The realization that the capability of this type of destruction lives in your community, in the youngest members of your ,community is a really powerful space to be in” said Museum treasurer and board member Maureen Kelly. “These are juveniles from here. I frankly went to school with their grandparents” she added.
It’s a mangled mess of inside the house of shattered glass. Kelly says the vandals let off a fire extinguisher, and climbed through vents. The damage receipts – a laundry list adding upwards of $100,000.
This isn’t an isolated incident according to Hal Raven. The owner of the Saratoga, Corinth, and Hudson Railway says teens vandalized his 1950s fleet of rail cars, even allegedly causing $40,000 worth of damage to car windows.
“I just think it's local kids that are bored” said Raven. “We can find things for people to do in a constructive manner," he added.
In bad situations, look for the helpers. Community members have been donating to the museum, one even showing up with cash on Tuesday.
What should happen to the alleged perps? Kelly says she isn't sure but: “I want them to be held accountable I want them to be caught and I want them to be, I want the public to know their names” said Kelly.
Kelly is determined to have downstairs open by may, the timeline for upstairs is uncertain.
