Third person arrested in Hood River bike theft that led to deadly confrontation
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A third person has been arrested in connection with a Hood River bike theft that turned deadly as an investigation into the death of Stephen Hayes continues, according to authorities.
Johnathan Bradly Matthews, 31, was first named a person of interest until he could be connected to the crime, according to the Hood River Sheriff’s Office. He now faces charges of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle after being arrested in The Dalles.
Two others, William Edward Hardy Jr. and Elizabeth June Bowman, were charged Saturday with second-degree manslaughter, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, first-degree theft and first-degree robbery.
Hayes was hit and “mortally injured” on Friday, April 11, when police say he confronted thieves from stealing a bike in his car and was found on the road near Fifth and June Street, according to investigators.
Despite efforts to save him, court documents say Hayes died at the scene.
Court documents say Hardy is homeless and has general delivery to The Dalles and Bowman is a Hood River resident, though it is unclear where they were arrested at this time. An investigation remains ongoing.
