Tottenham will find it difficult to sign 19-year-old without European football
Recent reports have now revealed Mathys Tel’s stance on a potential permanent deal at Tottenham Hotspur, but the forward’s stance could end up complicating things.
It’s common knowledge now that Mathys Tel is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and that Spurs have a £45million option to buy the young forward.
Since arriving at Hotspur Way, the youngster has racked up more minutes in a Spurs shirt over the past two months than he managed in the entire first half of the 2024/25 campaign at Bayern Munich.
Although he’s yet to really light up the Premier League—just two goals in the league and three across all competitions since joining—Tottenham are reportedly still keen on securing him permanently.
It has been reported that Spurs are now leaning towards not triggering Mathys Tel’s £45m clause but are instead looking to negotiate a reduced fee with Bayern Munich.
Mathys Tel stance on permanent Tottenham transfer revealed amid £45m fee
Now, fresh reports—this time from Football Insider—have outlined Mathys Tel’s position when it comes to a potential long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur.
It’s claimed that it would be difficult to convince the 19-year-old to remain at Tottenham unless the club qualifies for European football next season.
Of course, Spurs are still in the Europa League this term, with a second-leg quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt still to come.
However, given their poor showing in the Premier League, the Lilywhites would need to win the Europa League if they are to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Chelsea and Man United lurking as Spurs weigh up Tel deal
Before Tottenham Hotspur swooped in for Mathys Tel during the January window, several other Premier League clubs were reportedly monitoring his situation.
In fact, Spurs were said to have beaten both Arsenal and Chelsea to Tel’s signature at the time. But if they hesitate now, they could open the door for their rivals to pounce.
Chelsea are believed to be circling once more, ready to make a move on Tel should Tottenham fail to activate the purchase option in his contract.
Manchester United have also been linked again, with whispers of renewed interest after missing out in January.
Still, Ange Postecoglou isn’t paying much attention to the speculation surrounding Tel’s future and has encouraged fans to do the same.
The Australian coach dismissed the noise from Germany, saying: “Yeah, I mean don’t believe everything that comes out of German press. Any press really these days. I shouldn’t say press but just information in general. The days of it being double-checked, triple-checked, triple-sourced are long gone.
“No, Mathys is important for us. When he came in, people forget, he hadn’t played hardly at all at Bayern and we threw him in. He was playing game after game after game and it was always going to be a big ask for him, but that’s the challenge he had.
“Now we’re working with him at training, we really believe he can make an impact and physically he’s much better now. He’s in a much better place and he’s getting to understand our game a lot better, so we’ll keep working with him. I still think he’s an exciting talent and happy to have him.”
