Austin house explosion aftermath draws spectators
AUSTIN (KXAN) - As investigators continue to work to determine what caused a house to explode in north Austin Sunday, the site of the debris drew nonstop spectators to the aftermath.
Six people were injured, including two firefighters who responded to the scene. About two dozen other homes were damaged in some capacity. Some had their windows, doors or garage doors blown out.
The Austin Fire Department said people heard the explosion from as far away as Georgetown, which is more than 15 miles away.
'Tragedy Tourists Suck'
Around the corner about a block away from the Double Spur Loop home that was destroyed, a handmade sign, pictured below, shows how some neighbors feel about all of the attention the damage is getting.
"If the new issue is you know curious onlookers that want to come in and drive through the neighborhood and send up drones, just making sure we can all be responsible stewards of the neighborhood," said District 10 City Council Member Marc Duchen.
Mother and son help clean up trash, debris from house explosion
On Monday afternoon, Silas Fletcher and his mother Nikki were one of dozens of people on Double Spur Loop.
But they had trash bags in their hands.
"Well I think it's important because if you're going to come look you should at least help out, so you're not just staring and not doing anything to help," Silas said.
They focused most of their efforts on the yard of an elderly neighbor.
"To see if there's any debris we can get out of the way, anything to make it easier when she get back," Silas said.
Until the investigation is complete, the Travis County Fire Marshal's office said it will "not release any information or speculate on causes."
