Morrisons shutting 16 stores TOMORROW as part of major shake-up – is your local affected?

MORRISONS is set to close 16 of its stores tomorrow, as the chain pushes ahead with a major overhaul.

The Morrisons Daily convenience stores will be shutting their doors permanently on Wednesday, April 16, following a decision announced last month.

However, one location in Haxby will remain open for a few more weeks, closing on May 14.

The closures are part of broader cost-cutting and restructuring plans that also include shutting down dozens of in-store services such as cafes, florists, Market Kitchens, and meat and fish counters.

Some of the affected stores even house Post Offices – meaning locals are sure to feel their absence from the high street.

The supermarket said in a statement last month: “Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices.

“We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between April 9 and May 14.

“We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies.”

Here is the full list of Morrisons Daily stores closing tomorrow:

  • Lowestoft Road, Gorleston – April 16
  • 3-5 Old Town, Peebles – April 16
  • 214 Hutton Road, Shenfield – April 16

  • Crossways Post Office, Croydon – April 15

Luke Charters, Labour MP for York Outer, expressed his frustration at the closure of the Haxby branch, describing it as “sad news for those who rely on these services for their jobs and daily needs”.

Meanwhile, local news reports for Shenfield have suggested that the Post Office could be moved further down the high street instead.

If you live near one the branches affected and are interested to find out what will take its place, checking local Facebook groups can be a handy way to find out.

And if you’re looking to locate your nearest Morrisons, you can go on the supermarket’s website and use the Store Finder tool.

BIG CHANGES FOR MORRISONS

The closures come as part of a wider shake-up across Morrisons stores nationwide.

In an announcement last month, the retailer confirmed it would be shutting down 18 of its Market Kitchens, along with 13 florist stations, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters, and four pharmacy units.

In total, 365 employees now face potential redundancy as a result of the changes.

The decision to scale back its cafe operations is also expected to hit hard for budget-conscious families, particularly as Morrisons cafes have offered £5 meal deals for pensioners and provided free fruit and breakfast cereal for children during school holidays.

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the closures would “reinvigorate” the company and allow money to be invested in other areas.

He added: “In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.”

Meanwhile, Morrisons has recently made subtle increases to its café menu prices, with some items rising by as much as 6.25%.

According to the latest menu update from October 2024, the cost of the Ultimate Breakfast fry-up went up from £8 to £8.50.
