K-State's Sundell selected 26th overall in WNBA Draft
NEW YORK (KSNT) - K-State senior point guard Serena Sundell is moving on to the next phase of her basketball career.
Sundell was selected in the third round, 26th overall, by the Seattle Storm in the WNBA Draft Monday, April 14. She was one of just 15 players invited to attend the draft in person at 'The Shed' in New York City. She's just the ninth Wildcat in program history to be selected in the draft and the 12th overall to join the league.
To add a fun twist: Sundell will play professionally in the same city as her older brother Jalen, who is on the Seattle Seahawks' offensive line.
"My parents are thrilled, I'm thrilled, it'll be perfect," Sundell said on ESPN's broadcast. She's excited for the opportunity to compete for a roster spot.
The Maryville, Missouri native earned All-Big 12 First Team honors after an impressive senior campaign, where she led the nation and set K-State's single season record with 262 total assists. Her 811 total career assists puts her in first place in K-State's record books, and fourth in Big 12 history. She also holds the program record for career starts, with 139, and games played, with 139.
Sundell, both a facilitator and scorer, tallied a career-high eight double doubles this season. She's in sixth place on the Cats' all-time scoring list with 1,771 points.
The WNBA regular season is scheduled to begin on May 16th.
