UN: Over 300 civilians killed, 400,000 displaced in violent clashes in North Darfur, Sudan
Over 300 civilians, including aid workers, were killed in two days of clashes in North Darfur, Sudan, reports the UN.
A spokesperson for the United Nations announced that, based on initial reports from local sources, over 300 civilians, including 10 staff members from the humanitarian organization Relief International, were killed during clashes on Friday and Saturday around the refugee camps in North Darfur, Sudan.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) also reported that between 60,000 to 80,000 households, equating to approximately 400,000 people, were displaced after Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the Zamzam camp in North Darfur.
On Sunday, the RSF declared that after four days of fighting, they had successfully seized control of a large refugee camp in North Darfur.
Humanitarian agencies reported that the assault led to the destruction of shelters, markets, and medical facilities within the camp, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis.
The RSF claimed that the camp was being used as a base for what they referred to as “mercenary groups,” which contributed to the justification for their attack.
In addition to the violence surrounding the camps, the ongoing conflict between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied militia groups, including the Sudan Liberation Army, has intensified the crisis in the region.
The situation in North Darfur remains volatile, with continued fighting and significant humanitarian needs. The UN and various aid organizations are calling for immediate international intervention to address the escalating violence and provide relief to the displaced populations.
As the conflict shows no signs of de-escalating, there are growing concerns over the long-term impact on civilian infrastructure and the wellbeing of the millions affected. International efforts must be strengthened to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach those in desperate need.
