Thousands of Afghan families facing Humanitarian Crisis after forced deportation from Pakistan
Over 44,000 Afghan refugees have been forcibly deported from Pakistan since April 1, facing severe shortages of food, water, and shelter.
Thousands of Afghan families forcibly deported from Pakistan are facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Since April 1, over 44,000 individuals, including many children, have been expelled under Pakistan’s Illegal Foreigners Return Program.
These returnees, many of whom had lived in Pakistan for years, arrived at Afghanistan’s borders with minimal belongings, lacking essential resources like food, water, and shelter .
On Monday, Islamic Relief’s assessment team reported witnessing unprecedented numbers of returnees crossing into Afghanistan, often in groups and under extremely challenging conditions. Ramin Sadat, a multimedia producer with Islamic Relief, described the situation as “unprecedented,” highlighting the severe hardships faced by these families .
The majority of these deportees lack proper identification documents, hindering their access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and legal assistance. This documentation gap exacerbates their vulnerability and complicates efforts to provide adequate support.
In response to the crisis, Islamic Relief is mobilizing aid efforts at key border crossings like Torkham and Spin Boldak. Planned assistance includes the distribution of food, shelter materials, and household items to help families rebuild their lives .
The United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have called for immediate international intervention to address the escalating crisis. Efforts are underway to provide emergency relief and support the safe reintegration of returnees into Afghanistan society .
This mass deportation has intensified the strain on Afghanistan’s already fragile infrastructure and resources. The influx of returnees poses significant challenges to local communities and humanitarian agencies working to provide assistance.
As the situation continues to evolve, there is an urgent need for coordinated international support to ensure the safety and dignity of the affected families. Sustained humanitarian aid and policy interventions are critical to mitigating the long-term impacts of this crisis.
