Ronny Mauricio to Start Rehab Assignment
According to Héctor Gómez, Ronny Mauricio will play in his first rehab game Tuesday. The utility player will join the St. Lucie Mets as a designated hitter in his first taste of action since he tore his ACL during Dominican Winter League play in 2023.
It’s a welcome sign for Mauricio, 24, who has suffered several setbacks on his road to recovery. After missing the entire 2024 season after undergoing surgery in January 2024 to fix the ACL tear, Mauricio had a follow-up arthroscopic procedure in August to remove scar tissue. Mauricio didn’t play any games during spring training as he continued to progress in his rehab program. The Mets noted his return from the injury was slower than expected.
However, Mauricio’s time has finally come to take the next step, an important one in his rehabilitation. With Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuña struggling to produce at second base and Jeff McNeil still on the injured list (although closer than ever to returning), Mauricio’s return is as needed as ever.
The switch-hitter played in 26 games with the Mets in 2023, hitting .248/.296/.347/.643. He clubbed two home runs, scored 11 runs and stole seven bases in his brief appearance. Mauricio was on a torrid streak in the Dominican Winter League before his injury, slashing .441/.472/.706/1.178 with five extra-base hits in just eight games.
Mauricio can play second base, shortstop, third base and left field, although he’s only played second, third and shortstop with the Mets.
