Neighbors welcome wild turkey in Manhattan
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A visitor has returned to a familiar roost on Manhattan's East Side.
Neighbors are greeting the return of a wild turkey. The bird caught the city's attention in May 2024 and had been living on Roosevelt Island.
Last year after a sighting in Queens, she was spotted on the avenues of Manhattan and hanging out in trees and on building ledges.
The birding community determined she was a female and nicknamed her "Astoria." She eventually flew across the East River to Roosevelt Island. Food and water have been left out for her as neighbors took an interest in her presence. She survived the winter on the kindness of strangers.
Her life has been documented on social media.
Experts believe she is looking for a mate and probably would return to the comfort of Roosevelt Island.
Wild turkey flocks are established on Staten Island and in the Bronx.
