‘What is the reason?’: Woman gets her car washed 2 times a day. Is that overkill?
Are you overwashing your car? Most of us would be lucky if we could make it through our local drive-thru car wash every month or so.
Other people, however, might be over-prioritizing their vehicle's cleanliness. Take self-identified content creator Teesha Teesh (@teeshaofficial), for example.
According to a recent post, Teesh claims that she washes her car up to twice a day. Is this good or bad? Her car might shine—but is she damaging the finish in the long run?
Teesh made her TikTok post on Friday. As of today, it has over 26,100 views.
Twice a day
In her video, Teesh is seated in her car as it goes through an automated car wash. She smiles at the camera as the brushes and sprayers apply a thick coat of soap to the vehicle.
The on-screen text reads, "Gotta be the only person that washes my car 2x a day .. every day."
She smiles broadly at the camera before the video ends.
How often should you wash your car?
Is washing your car twice a day overwashing? How often should you do it?
According to most experts, the ideal amount to wash your vehicle is every other week. Doing so removes the contaminants your car is exposed to day to day, such as debris, mud, insects, and tar.
Over time, these contaminants can damage the car's paint job if left uncleaned.
"But there’s no one right answer to this question," according to Progressive Insurance's Auto blog.
"It depends on factors like your lifestyle, the climate where you live, and how you store your vehicle when you’re not driving it," it notes.
But can you wash your car too much?
Can you overwash your car?
The answer seems to be yes and no.
ASE-certified mechanic Nikki Ayers, writing for Endurance Warranty, says overwashing can damage your car's finish over time, resulting in "spider-webbing"—tiny cracks in the finish and clear coat.
Ayers warns to use products specifically designed to clean vehicles and to use microfiber towels or cloths to apply and remove them to avoid damaging the car.
"You should never wash your car with any kind of abrasive or harsh chemicals. Always use soaps and waxes that are designed specifically for use with automobiles," the outlet notes.
However, Jonathan Ganther, co-founder of Brakes to Go, told Progressive that you can't really overwash your car. "Just make sure you’re washing your car properly so you don’t cause unintentional issues in the process," he said.
