Trump praises Rory McIlroy for ‘tremendous courage’ in Masters win
President Trump congratulated Rory Mcllroy on his Masters win, saying it took “tremendous courage” for him to win the prestigious golf tournament after the Northern Ireland player lost the lead and was forced into a playoff.
“Well, I have to congratulate Rory. That showed tremendous courage. He was, he was having a hard time, but it showed great guts and stamina and courage,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday.
“People have no idea how tough that is, and he came back. He can be proud,” Trump continued. “Actually, it's better for him that it happened that way because that showed real courage. To have come back from what could have been a tragedy, was amazing.”
McIlroy completed golf's career Grand Slam with the victory by winning all four of the sport's major championships in his career. It took him 11 years between when he won his third of the four prizes before winning the Masters.
The golfer had come close to winning the championship before and many thought he might never achieve the Grand Slam, something only five other male golfers have previously accomplished.
Trump, a golfer himself, called the Masters golf tournament “maybe my favorite sporting show.”
Tiger Woods, one of the other six Grand Slam winners, did not compete in the Masters this year because of an injury but congratulated Mcllroy on his win.
“Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory. Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!” he wrote on X.
