Supercomputer predicts whether Tottenham will make Europa League semi-finals
Tottenham Hotspur’s fate in the Europa League hangs in the balance — but if a supercomputer’s prediction is right, Spurs fans might be in for a rough ride.
Every Tottenham Hotspur fan has clear eyes on the second-leg tie against Eintracht Frankfurt coming up on Thursday 17 April 2025.
A 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium means that the tie is finely poised ahead of next week.
Frankfurt are definitely in the better position, having managed to hold onto a draw away from home, and now have it all to play for at Deutsche Bank Park in Germany.
Supercomputer predicts Europa League quarter-final exit for Tottenham
Of course, Spurs ought to have taken a lead into their quarter-final second leg, having been the dominant side in their home tie. However, six shots on target and two strikes against the woodwork weren’t enough to put them ahead.
It was even more frustrating considering the visitors only managed two shots on target throughout the game, yet they still grabbed a goal from an xG of 0.36.
Now, Opta’s AI has attempted to predict which side is most likely to reach the Europa League semi-finals.
According to their forecasts, Tottenham Hotspur are currently the more likely of the two teams to miss out on a place in the last four, with just a 45.6% chance of progression.
Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt have been given a 54.4% chance of making it through — a blow to Spurs fans, no doubt, if these projections were to hold true.
Spurs’ away form and Micky van de Ven’s belief ahead of Frankfurt trip
It’s understandable why Frankfurt are being tipped so strongly — they’ve not lost at home in Europe this season.
However, Tottenham themselves have had a mixed bag on the road. They’ve suffered defeats away to Galatasaray and AZ Alkmaar, and couldn’t find a win against a Rangers side that were struggling in the league at the time.
Micky van de Ven is confident Tottenham can get the job done against Frankfurt on Thursday. He said: “Yeah, a really good goal. I think a really good attack also from our side. An unbelievable finish from Pedro [Porro], an unbelievable team goal I would say!
“I think we deserved more today, even like the second half we created so many chances and then we play 1-1 and I said we have to go again next week and take all these positive things.”
Asked whether the performance would give Spurs the confidence to clinch the tie away from home, van de Ven continued: “Yeah, it’s gonna be a tough game, it’s a tough place to go, but you see what we showed today and how we dominated. Yeah, we have the confidence to go there and win.”
