Spurs fans spot a worrying matchday trend at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Spurs fans have slammed the noise levels at home games this season, with many pointing fingers at the lifeless atmosphere inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Eintracht Frankfurt.
April 10, Thursday, saw Tottenham play one of their biggest games yet this season, as they welcomed Eintracht Frankfurt to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Prior to the Frankfurt match, manager Ange Postecoglou called out for his 12th man—the fans—stating that he needed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium bouncing, as this often tends to make the difference on European nights.
He said: “It’s hugely important. With every European game, you are watching last night or watching tonight, the atmosphere makes a big impact. It’s a big part of European football.
“A lot of teams that have success in Europe are on the back of a really strong home atmosphere. We hope it’s the same for us tomorrow.”
Tottenham fans blast poor atmosphere after big Europa League night
Well, the match ended 1-1, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Frankfurt. However, Spurs fans themselves were not too pleased with the atmosphere on the night and have since shared their damning verdict on the noise levels at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.
One fan said, when asked for their honest thoughts on the atmosphere last Thursday: “Poor at best.”
Another stated: “It was basically s**t. We started off decently but as soon as we conceded, it was back to that typical funeral atmosphere. There were occasional pockets of noise in the second half but still very poor.”
A third commented: “Very disappointing. The Frankfurt fans were louder than us.” Another fan pointed to the team’s slow start as a big contributor: “The stadium is not the problem. When we were loud in the first 3 minutes, it was very loud. The fans are not the problem. In the bar before kick-off, it was very loud. It’s getting this thing co-ordinated. And singing even when we’re playing boring football (I admit I find this hard).”
One simply said: “Appalling.” Another described it as horrendous: “Horrendous. Started off decent on the concourse before the game. Then the club do what they do best. Ruin it. No need for the stupid light show, everyone let’s stop singing and get our phones out. Like being at a Coldplay gig. Won’t bother commenting on those flags either.”
One final voice noted how Frankfurt fans were given more tools to make themselves heard: “They let the Frankfurt fans have megaphones and drums. We got about 15 blue and white flags which the stewards collected at kick-off, and the trumpeter. Says it all really.”
Frankfurt atmosphere warning ahead of second leg as Spurs fans fear the worst
A final supporter warned about what the atmosphere would be like in Germany, stating: “When it’s mostly hospitality and happy clappers, what do you expect. 3,000 Germans showed how to create an atmosphere. Yes, 3,000. Wait for next week, at their place.”
Ange Postecoglou’s scout also issued a similar warning of how loud and deafening it can get at Frankfurt, with the manager saying: “I can’t control that. As I said before, I would like to think irrespective of people’s feelings right now, I don’t think there will be a Tottenham supporter out there who doesn’t want to win the Europa League.
“The home game in the Europa League is going to be important. We had someone at the Frankfurt game last week and they said the atmosphere was really loud.”
