Vandegrift boys soccer earns state championship
AUSTIN (KXAN) - On a toasty April afternoon in Georgetown, the Vandegrift boys soccer team claimed the Class 6A Division II state title.
The Vipers handled Mesquite by a score of 3-1 to take home the hardware. James Hehman got the scoring started in the first half with a powerful right-footed strike from over 25 yards away from goal that blazed past the Mesquite goalkeeper.
"It means the world," said the senior Hehman. "This is all I've ever wanted to do. So lucky it came my senior year. The last game."
Nabhi Shrimal and Nick Abeling added the other two goals for Vandegrift, assisted by Kjell Snyder and Jason Panoff respectively.
Vandegrift made the state championship last year but fell. This is the school's first boys soccer state championship.
"Everybody here is super happy," said Vipers head coach Jonathan Winship. "For us a program, this is the first time for us to do it. We're really proud of ourselves."
Mesquite got on the scoresheet in the second half but it was too little too late. Vandegrift joined the Austin Achieve boys, Liberty Hill boys and Cedar Park girls as local teams to claim a title this week at Birkelbach Field.
