Sister of suspect in New Iberia homicide spoke out
NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)- Markisha Adams told News 10 the homicide stemmed from previous traumatic events. Adams, the sister of the suspect, 36-year-old Marklin Reaux, claimed this was an act of self-defense.
This comes after the New Iberia Police Department said they were called to the 200 block of Pollard Avenue around 9 o'clock Saturday morning for a welfare concern. When detectives arrived, they found a man dead inside of a home. While at the home, officers discovered the vehicle of the deceased man was not at the home.
After obtaining the vehicle's information, New Iberia Police were able to locate the vehicle in the area of West Main Street and Landry Drive, with the suspect, Reaux, inside. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Reaux refused to stop, initiating a vehicle pursuit from New Iberia to Breaux Bridge.
The pursuit traveled several miles, eventually coming to an end on Poydras Place in Breaux Bridge, where the vehicle was disabled by a police unit. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, St. Martinville Police Department, and Breaux Bridge Police Department assisted with the pursuit and apprehension of Reaux.
Adams claimed Reaux, who is also her brother, was allegedly raped by the victim for years.
"He raped him for days, he raped him for years, and this was his pain, all lashing out at one person, this was self-defense," Adams said.
Adams sends a message to the public to pray for their family during this difficult time.
"Prayers, prayers, for our families through this hard time, we need it, we definitely need it, it's hard," Adams said.
36-year-old Marklin Reaux was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on first-degree murder charges, theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated flight from an officer, violation of protective orders, and possession of schedule I and II CDS.
Reaux's bond is set at over $10 million.
New Iberia Police says this incident is still under investigation.
