Tottenham told they were wrong to sell defender in 2023 – ‘I still don’t understand’
The president of Galatasaray has explained why he cannot believe that Tottenham Hotspur decided to let Davinson Sanchez go almost two years ago.
Sanchez initially joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £42m deal from Ajax back in 2017 and the centre-back spent six years at the North London club, making a total of 207 appearances for the Lilywhites.
While the Colombian initially showed a lot of promise, he never truly managed to establish himself as one of the club’s important players and was eventually sold to Galatasaray in 2023.
The 28-year-old has been nearly flawless for the Turkish giants, emerging as a leader at the back for the club and playing a key role in their Super Lig win last season.
Galatasaray can’t believe Tottenham sold Davinson Sanchez
Galatasaray have certainly been very happy with Sanchez’s performances, particularly considering they paid just £12.8m for him.
In fact, the club’s president Dursun Ozbek has now admitted that he is still at a loss as to why Spurs let a defender of his quality leave the club.
Ozbek told Milliyet: “I still don’t understand how you let Sanchez go. He is a very special football player, and we are very pleased with him.”
When Ozbek was then pressed on why Sanchez was let go by the Premier League side, he said: “Because sometimes you have to leave. It was the same for Sanchez and he is playing very well at Galatasaray. This was a decision Sanchez made, and he showed how right it was. He found himself at Galatasaray as well.”
Davinson Sanchez compared favourably to Virgil van Dijk
The former Tottenham defender has been so good in Turkey that he has been compared with a player who has been widely recognised as one of the best centre-backs to ever grace the Premier League.
Amedspor manager Servet Cetin said at the start of this season that Sanchez is a better defender than Virgil van Dijk, which is a statement Spurs fans will find hard to stomach, given how error-prone the Colombian was at N17.
