Wolves vs Tottenham Hotspur: Premier League team news and preview

With one eye on the Europa League quarter-final second leg, Ange Postecoglou’s rotated Tottenham side will look to put an end to Wolves’ four-game unbeaten streak on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs could’ve only wished to go straight from the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt to the second, considering how much momentum they had built – particularly in that second half.

But sandwiched in between is a trip to face a resurgent Wolves side, just safe from relegation and amidst their best run of form all season.

While it might appear to be a mere formality, it’s far from that. Spurs will field a rotated squad, but the need to carry confidence into Thursday’s return leg makes this clash just as important.

What time does Wolves vs Tottenham Hotspur kick off?

Location: Wolverhampton, England

How both teams go into Wolves vs Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs head into this one after a 1-1 draw away to Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final. Ignore the scoreline and this would go into their list of their best performances this season.

Prior to that, Tottenham ended their Premier League winless run with a 3-1 home victory over Southampton, having previously lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Wolves, meanwhile, sit 17th in the table but should probably be viewed as close competitors to Spurs considering how similar their league campaigns have been. After once looking doomed, they now sit 17th with a healthy 12-point buffer over 18th-placed Ipswich Town.

They’re on a three-game winning streak, most recently a 2-1 comeback win over Ipswich. Before that, they beat West Ham 1-0 and Southampton 2-1. While all three wins have come against the bottom sides, three in a row is still a confidence booster.

They’ve not faced a side stronger than them in a while, but that raises the question: are Spurs actually any better than Wolves right now?

Wolves head-to-head record vs Tottenham

It’s no secret that Spurs don’t enjoy playing Wolves. Since their last win over them in August 2022, they’ve met four times and lost three of those encounters. Moreover, Tottenham have not won at Molineux since 2021. Wolves were also the only bottom-half side to do the double over Ange Postecoglou’s team last season.

The reverse fixture this season should’ve been Spurs’ to take. After conceding early to a smart set-piece, they managed to turn it around before half-time and even had a golden chance to make it 3-1had Son Heung-min not missed a penalty. Predictably, Wolves equalised late on.

Injuries plagued Tottenham that day but this time it will be a different kind of absence. The big guns will be rested for Frankfurt.

Tottenham team news

The usual trend continued against Frankfurt; someone always has to go down. This time it was Destiny Udogie, though Postecoglou quickly clarified it was only cramp.

The good news? Dejan Kulusevski has returned to training, while Kevin Danso is also progressing well. Although neither will feature here, Ange hinted Kulusevski could have a chance for Germany.
Radu Dragusin remains the only long-term absentee.

Wolves team news

Wolves have no fresh concerns heading into the weekend. However, Enso Gonzalez, Leon Chiwome, Sasa Kalajdzic and Yerson Mosquera are all ruled out.

Predicted Tottenham line-up

Vicario; Porro, Gray, Davies, Spence; Sarr, Bissouma, Maddison; Tel, Richarlison, Odobert.

It’s not easy to predict this one. Ange Postecoglou made his first substitutions against Frankfurt with just 10 minutes left, giving little away.

As Ange said, some players can be kept in cotton wool, while others need to play regularly. In this context, we understand that Micky van de Ven, Lucas Bergvall, and Rodrigo Bentancur all need to be wrapped in cotton wool for this game, whereas Pedro Porro and Cristian Romero are among those who need to keep playing and could retain their spots.

Pedro Porro could be rested, but if he does start, it will be his third straight 90-minute outing; something that might tempt Ange to turn to Sergio Reguilon.

James Maddison was the only midfielder to be taken off early in midweek, so he’s likely to start ahead of Bentancur and Bergvall.

Up front, Mathys Tel is due a proper chance, and Ange is under pressure to give it to him. Richarlison is tipped to return to the XI for the first time since early February.

There were rumours of a hamstring issue for Wilson Odobert, but he was on the bench against Frankfurt although he wasn’t given any minutes, so expect him to feature here only if fit. If not, Mikey Moore or Timo Werner could step in.

Players to watch out for

Richarlison – He injures himself so frequently, yet fans haven’t forgotten what he brings. We can’t help but wonder how different things might have looked had he stayed fit. If he starts, expect him to bring that typical chaos inside the box.

Djed Spence – With Destiny Udogie likely being rested, Djed Spence is expected to start. He’ll be eager to build on his 4 goal contributions and prove exactly why fans were baffled by his Frankfurt omission.

Yves Bissouma – Inconsistently inconsistent – but when he turns up, he really turns up. It’s been a while since he’s had a proper go, but this match might be the one where he puts his name back on the radar.

Jorgen Strand Larsen – Three goals in his last three league games, he also scored the wild equaliser in the reverse fixture. He’ll be a real test for Archie Gray.

Pablo Sarabia – He’s the classic super-sub, and if he comes on late, Spurs need to be on alert. Did it against Ipswich, did it against Spurs last year.

Our prediction

It’s tempting to say this game doesn’t matter, with the bigger task looming in Germany. But that would be ignoring the importance of momentum – and pride.

A win here wouldn’t shake up the table massively, but it would move Spurs up to 13th if Manchester United lose.

Spurs may be sending out a rotated side, but many of those players will have something to prove, and that edge could make the difference.

Predicted score: Wolves 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
