UNICEF provides Health Services to over 20 million people in Afghanistan in 2024
UNICEF provided essential health services to over 20 million people in Afghanistan, including nearly 10 million children and mothers, during the year 2024.
In 2024, UNICEF provided essential health services to more than 20 million people in Afghanistan, half of whom were children, according to its annual report released on Thursday, April 10. These services were delivered through health centers supported by the UN agency across various provinces in the country.
The report also highlights that nearly 12 million mothers and children benefited from UNICEF’s nutrition programs, which were critical in addressing widespread malnutrition and food insecurity under challenging humanitarian conditions.
UNICEF emphasized the role of community-based education in reaching vulnerable populations, especially girls. Around 564,000 children, 64% of whom were girls, accessed learning opportunities through its “Community-Based Education” initiative, aimed at bridging educational gaps in rural and underserved areas.
Despite these achievements, UNICEF acknowledged the complex humanitarian landscape in Afghanistan, citing ongoing challenges related to access, security, and restrictions imposed under Taliban governance that affect program delivery and community outreach.
In September 2023, UNICEF reported its support of approximately 2,400 health centers across Taliban-controlled regions, ensuring continued access to basic medical services for remote and conflict-affected populations.
The agency’s efforts were particularly vital in the absence of a fully functioning public health system. Humanitarian organizations have filled critical service gaps as Afghanistan continues to grapple with economic collapse and institutional disruptions since the change in regime in 2021.
UNICEF has called on the international community to maintain funding and support for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan. Sustained efforts are deemed essential to protect the rights and wellbeing of Afghanistan’s children and ensure continued access to health, nutrition, and education services.
