'Dying to serve': Texas man on final mission to give back in all 50 states makes Oregon stop
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is determined to volunteer in all 50 states after doctors diagnosed him with terminal prostate cancer.
In early 2025, the cancer reached its fourth stage, giving Doug Ruch, 55, from Texas, no more than 18 months to live. Instead of waiting, Ruch chose to give back.
“When you get hit with that kind of news, it really makes you think about life and what you’ve done,” Ruch said. “I decided I was going to do some good.”
Ruch started his journey on March 17, 2025, and has since volunteered in nine states. This week, he made his way to Oregon, visiting the Oregon coast, a place he’d always wanted to see.
“I’ve never been here, so I’m loving Oregon,” he said.
While in Lake Oswego, he volunteered at an adult community center, delivering meals to seniors.
Despite his illness, Ruch aims to inspire others to give back, regardless of their own challenges. “There’s so much need in this country, and the need is growing,” he said. “I want to encourage people to get involved and help out.”
The physical toll of his illness is real, but Ruch says he finds energy and purpose on volunteer days.
After spending his life savings on medical expenses over the last few years, Ruch now relies on donations to fund his "Dying to Serve” tour.
Ruch’s ultimate goal is to leave a legacy of kindness and inspire others to serve.
“If I could leave a legacy, it would be for ‘dying to serve’ to become a movement,” he said.
Next, Ruch heads to Seattle, continuing his journey.
