Newcastle Eagles soar into first ever European Final
Newcastle Eagles qualified for their first European final as they cruised past Polish side Dziki Warszawa 80-67 in the 2024/2025 ENBL Final Four semi-final at the Gopass Arena on Tuesday evening.
The victory meant the Eagles will face CSO Voluntari in the final on Wednesday evening in Bratislava.
The British side will be playing for a chance to become the first British men’s basketball team to win a European title.
De Sean Allen Eiken recorded a team-high 18 points to lead his side to victory. Additionally, Mike Okauru and Christian James both scored 14 points for the Eagles.
Alijah Cormithier led his side in scoring with 13 points, while Janari Joesaar added 11 points off the bench in the loss.
Marc Steutel’s men got off to a perfect start, combining smooth offence with solid defence to hold their opponents to just nine points in the first quarter. The Eagles maintained control of the game and took an 11-point lead into halftime.
After trailing by as many as 20 points in the second quarter, the Polish side fought their way back into the game, cutting the deficit to five points entering the fourth. However, the Eagles held onto their lead and secured an historic victory.
Up next, Newcastle Eagles will face CSO Voluntari in the Final Four final on Wednesday, April 9 at 7.30pm (UK time) at the Gopass Arena. Furthermore, it will be their second match-up against the Romanian side after their win in the group stage.
Meanwhile, Dziki Warszawa will battle Inter Bratislava in the third-place game at 4.30pm (UK time).
