Washburn University celebrates 3rd Spanish Immersion Day
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Students from various Topeka high schools were immersed in the Spanish culture.
Across Washburn University's Memorial Union students danced, drew and more while learning about the cultural background for each art form from Washburn Spanish Club members.
Spanish Professor and Spanish Club Coordinator, Georgina Tenny, started the Spanish Immersion Day program as a way to give her college students an opportunity to showcase what they've learned.
The professor hopes through the experience high school students see the applications for another language and grow an appreciation for the culture.
“Sometimes the students they’re in class but it’s all out of a book and they think the language exists in a book," Tenny said. "It’s important to us that they know this is a living language. We try to take them abroad, that’s not a possibility for everybody. Since that’s not a possibility for everybody, we need to bring abroad to them.”
With the 3rd Spanish Immersion day in the books, Tenny and the Spanish Club are already hard at work making plans for next year's event.
