New state GOP leader
has her head in sand

Re: “First black woman to lead California’s GOP ready to take on Dems” (Page A1, April 6).

If the truth is told often enough, people could believe it.

President Trump is not a businessman, as stated by Corrin Rankin, head of California’s GOP. One can do their own research and Google these six Trump businesses that indeed went into bankruptcy: Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza Hotel, Plaza Hotel, Trump Hotels and Resorts, Trump Entertainment Resorts, and Trump Castle Hotel and Casino. People could search “President Trump did not have six bankruptcies,” and they would not find any alternative facts to support that premise, no matter how hard they tried. Six bankruptcies do not a good businessman make, and it should be something we all easily agree upon.

Right now, we are headed toward his seventh: the United States of America, and frighteningly, the world economy. Let’s keep pounding the pavement with the truth.

Trump’s detractors are
being bad Americans

I voted for Donald Trump twice, albeit somewhat reluctantly. Yet I thought he was a good president on policy overall. After 2020, however, I prayed for God to replace him.

I knew that if Trump ever became President again, then the all-out effort to bring him down would immediately resume. But I ask those of you who support this: How can you consider yourselves good Democrats when you refuse to accept the legitimacy of a democratically elected president, no matter how much you might disagree with him or, even, hate him?

Since 2016, I’ve attended several townhalls with local House representatives, and all were nothing other than anti-Trump rallies. This is wrong, people.

President Trump is boldly doing what more than 77 million of us elected him to do, believing that he’s trying to do what’s best for our nation. If you can’t accept this, then, sorry, but you’re not acting like good Americans.

Column fails to make
its point on tariffs

Re: “How tariffs destroy what makes America great” (Page A7, April 4).

David Brooks attempts to explain how the Trump tariffs are a bad thing without even suggesting why it’s unfair for other countries to impose higher tariffs on incoming U.S. goods than the U.S. imposes on theirs.

Brooks feels that the current tariff system results in individuals who “are enthusiastic about novelty … have diverse curiosity … have social range … combine disparate worldviews … [and] are driven toward continual growth.” While those are nice things to have, we are the world’s richest country and have a cataclysmic deficit.

Brooks doesn’t explain why his niceties would disappear if tariffs were made fair. Perhaps Brooks should ask: If making other countries pay their fair share is what’s required to make America great, what does that say about America?

Trump dishonors
soldiers’ memory

Amid President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff trade war, $6 trillion stock market crash, dismissal of intelligence personnel at the behest of a right-wing activist and use of a commercial app to discuss war plans, another item escaped the headlines.

After a days-long search, the bodies of four Army servicemen missing in a NATO training exercise were recovered in Lithuania. As their hearses passed through the Lithuanian capital, the streets were lined with civilians, a number in tears, holding American and Lithuanian flags. Rows of Lithuanian troops saluted our soldiers as they began their last journey home.

Despite the turmoil created by the Trump administration with European allies, respect remains for the United States and the sacrifices of our military.

And where was President Trump for the dignified transfer of the flag-draped caskets? He opted to join a Saudi-supported LIV golf tournament, showing a very different kind of commitment.

Voter ID rules are
ineffective, unnecessary

Re: “SAVE Act claims to solve big problem that doesn’t exist” (Page A8, April 6).

Voting ID laws being enacted in many states are so unnecessary. We already have an ID on every ballot. It’s called your signature.

The signature is checked by the registrar of voters. When people register to vote, they swear that they are citizens, live at their address and are the correct age. The signature makes the document legal.

Why do we need more ID laws? Laws will not make people more trustworthy.
