Lucas Bergvall told there is something very wrong with his game at Tottenham
Troy Deeney says that Lucas Bergvall is one of the main root causes of Tottenham’s midfield issues, revealing what he has noticed about the player’s bad habits in the middle of the park.
Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield looks a lot different to what many would have expected at the start of this season, due to the struggles of some senior men as well as the impressive growth of some youngsters.
One man who has made a spot in the middle of the park his own is Lucas Bergvall, who has emerged as one of Spurs’ most important players over recent months.
Bergvall has received plenty of praise from key figures in the game, but one pundit has explained why he is not a fan of the Swede.
Troy Deeney notices an issue with Lucas Bergvall at Tottenham
The 19-year-old looks set to continue playing a key role for Ange Postecoglou’s men in the final run-in this season.
In fact, reports indicate that there is a lot of excitement at Tottenham about the possibility of a Bergvall-Gray midfield pairing in the future, with big things expected of the former Djurgardens IF man in the years to come.
However, Deeney believes that the teenager still does not have the positional awareness to perform the role he has been asked to in midfield.
The former Watford man told talkSPORT: “The midfield, in my opinion, can’t be sorted until we know who’s the sitting midfielder. Bentancur runs around a lot but doesn’t get on the ball.
“The boy Lucas Bergvall, he’s a young kid, he just runs. I understand why fans like him, but he’s never in position, he doesn’t hold the shape, he just runs everywhere.”
Should Bergvall be used further forward by Spurs?
Postecoglou did use Bergvall as more of a number ten earlier this season but the Australian clearly seems to now trust the youngster to operate in a deeper midfield role.
The Swede does have the legs to get up and down, but perhaps he still does not have the required defensive nous and tactical maturity off the ball as he tends to sometimes vacate the space in midfield and leave the defence exposed.
However, those qualities will undoubtedly come with time as Bergvall gains more experience in playing at the highest level.
