NFL Legend Issues Warning After Patriots Trade Joe Milton III To Cowboys
Joe Milton III reportedly didn’t want to stay with the Patriots because he thought he wasn’t going to have the chance to actually compete for New England’s starting quarterback job this summer.
While some – or perhaps most – believe Milton initially will face the same roadblock in Dallas, one of the all-time greatest Cowboys players seems to believe the door is at least ajar for the rocket-armed signal-caller.
Upon Milton joining America’s Team, Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin issued a warning to Dak Prescott, who’s about to enter his 10th season as Dallas’ starting quarterback.
“Don’t give this kid a chance, Dak,” Irvin said on his YouTube channel, as transcribed by Sports Illustrated. “You better stay healthy, stay ready, stay on the football field.
“Now remember, you’re making $60 million a year. This kid (is) making only $1 million. If you give him a chance on the field, it’ll be ugly.”
There’s a chance Irvin got carried away with his proclamation. Yes, Milton has a skill set that can make your jaw drop at times and his NFL debut was undeniably impressive. But that standout performance was in a relatively meaningless season finale against Buffalo Bills backups, and Milton’s wild inconsistency in college was a big reason why he slid to the sixth round of last year’s draft.
And yes, Prescott has had his ups and downs and the Cowboys never have advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs with him behind center. But we’re also talking about a three-time Pro Bowl selection who only is two seasons removed from finishing second in NFL MVP voting.
So, all things considered, it’s probably a little ridiculous to be talking about Milton usurping Prescott at this juncture.
