Apartment problems after fire lead woman to call News 4
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — A family in Midwest City was forced out of their apartment by a fire upstairs back on March 28.
Days later, they were told their apartment was ready for them to move back, but they say they walked into a mess.
Hali Kelley and her family have been dealing with a soaking wet carpet at the Huntington Place Apartments in Midwest City for nearly 10 days.
While management has done a few things to help, Kelley says more needs to be done but they won't do anything, which is why she reached out to News 4 for help.
"They promised us that the apartment was back to normal, that we could come back," Kelley said. "So, we came back under the impression that it was all fixed up, brought both of our kids here. When we walked in, we was bombarded with smell. The carpets were still flooded and soaked."
After being told everything was okay, Kelley and her family returned home to what they called a mess.
"Even all this padding that's right here in the middle is soaking wet, too, and they won't take it out," Kelley said.
On March 28, a fire engulfed their upstairs neighbor's apartment. Fire crews put the fire out but flooded Kelley's apartment in the process.
"By the time they got the fire put out, management had came and told us that we needed to relocate until Monday," Kelley said.
For an entire weekend, they were told their apartment was being repaired.
"Like if they were going to kick us out for three days, they had time to come in and at least suck some of the water out, but they didn't even attempt to try at all," Kelley said.
A week later, and she is still worried the damage done is a risk to her children.
"Who says the roof can't fall in on my kids or anything like that, because I feel like they're just barely fixing it, not fixing it the correct way," Kelley said.
She says communication with management has been minimal.
We went to the leasing office to try and figure out what has been going on. We were told to leave the property before getting any of our questions answered.
After hearing this, Kelley wonders when her apartment will be fixed.
"I just want the apartment fixed," Kelley said. "I want it back to normal, where my kids are safe and where it smells clean and is a healthy environment."
We will follow up with Kelley in the coming days to see if repairs are made.
