You Must Be Deluded to Think We’ll Beat PSG—Really?
I was talking to my friend Darren the day after PSG beat Liverpool at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League competition. My friend is a very passionate Villa fan who has supported them through thick and thin. He’s followed them home and away for a very long time and he is always quick to give an opinion even if it’s not a popular one.
Darren said to me, “That Villa haven’t got a chance of beating PSG, and I would stand in front of any Villa fan and tell them to their face, that they are deluded if they think that we will beat them over two legs.”
Even as he was saying that, I was already thinking of the ways we can beat PSG—not just once, but over two legs.
Our first chance of beating them depends on Emery’s starting line-up. So, Emery must play the big guns. No question. Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford have to play. They are big-time players who have played for big-time football clubs in the biggest competitions in football. Their experience, quality, and renewed hunger to prove people wrong will give us a great chance of beating them over two legs.
Our second chance? We’re playing the first leg away from home. It’s statistically proven that teams that play away from home in the first leg of a quarter-final have a 55 to 60% chance of progressing through to the semi-finals when they play the second at home. And you just know that Villa Park is going to be a rocking and a rolling when the French side come to Birmingham. They won’t know what’s hit them!
And what about our current form? We’re unbeaten in seven matches across all competitions. The whole squad—especially players like Morgan Rogers—are playing with a swagger and confidence like we love to see, and yes, it’s there for all to see. We’ve never had it so good. Well, that has got to be another chance for us.
Now, my favourite chance of all. It’s written in the stars, isn’t it? How many times have you wished that you’d put a £10 bet on a player that has signed for a new club and then that player only goes and scores the winning goal against the club that he had left? It happens all the time, right? Imagine this—Marco Asensio, on loan from PSG, lining up against them, and scoring the winner to knock them out. It’s poetic. It’s fate. Oh my goodness, I can see the headlines now. It’s the stuff fairytales are made of.
So, Darren, this is what I believe are our chances of getting through to the semi-finals. You’d probably say I’m deluded—so be it. UTV
